Mustard Green Smoothie?

I will never try that again! I never had mustard greens before and didn't realize that they had a distinct taste when blended up. When I opened up the top of my Vita-Mix I literally drew my nose away...it smelled mustard-y (and mustard with strawberries and bananas just doesn't sound good to me)! After a minute or two the smell kind of diminished so I stuck a straw in there to take a small sip.

It seriously had a burning type sensation in my mouth...I don't know if I just had them in my fridge too long or what, but I will never do that again! Now I am off to find a recipe to make with the rest of my mustard greens!

Yes, mustard greens have a very distinct and potent flavor! I kinda like mustard greens but on a sandwich. Possibly in a juice but a more savory one. Anyway, at least you got some health benefits from it! ;)

Yes, I think a small amount will go very well in a savory juice....I made a savory smoothie once. The taste was good, but it took me a while to drink, it was intense! If I would have juiced it, I think it would have been much better with a thinner consistency.

I wish I had read your story before making the same mistake! I don't think you actually consumed yours though, did you? Well, I did. It wasn't easy, but I was determined! As I was finishing it, I began to regret it. And now 2 hours later, I still feel pretty queasy. I consumed at least half a pound of mustard greens with an apple, banana, and a bit of lemon juice on an empty stomach. Strongly NOT recommended!

Oh my!! Take it easy today, if you can...I'm sure your poor stomach isn't feeling too well. I poured all of mine out.

I have to hand it to you for not being wasteful! :)

So I just made a mustard green smoothie and omg horrible! I'm online googling mustard green smoothie and your post popped up first. Wish I had googled it before I made it lol. Throwing it out now.

yeah i just did the exact same thing. just googled mustard green smoothie. i dont want to waste it--is there any food with a flavor than can neutralize the mustard? its unbelievably horrible.

Made the same mistake. Blended mango, orange, and a couple of mustard green leaves into the vilest concoction ever created, bar none. On reading your posts, I have firmly resolved to dump the noxious batch.

It's kinda good to hear that I'm not the only one who made this mistake! I know the feeling of pouring out a huge batch and feeling as though I wasted sooo much...but better than a yucky tummy!

I don't think there is anything that can neutralize the mustard taste!

I wish there were more messages on green smoothie websites that say BEWARE OF MUSTARD GREENS. Instead, many websites list it as an option. I had the same reaction this morning that you all had... a burning mouth and upset stomach after a few sips. My husband almost spit it out. I feel I wasted money on making that one. :( Thanks for your posts. Glad I wasn't the only one.

I know! If you have any leftover, maybe you can a small amount or a sandwich, or if you steam veggies, you could lightly steam the rest, so it's not a complete waste.

My husband wouldn't even taste it!

Yea, I'm a smoothie virgin with only about 4 days of smoothieing, and OMG, I just tried a mustard green smoothie, since all the websites say to vary your greens. Mine was 1 1/2 of very large mustard green leaves, 1 frozen banana, 1 pear, 4 oz of soy milk, 4 oz of water, and some lemon. I was shocked... I did get it down, but I was wondering if I was drinking spicy dijon mustard... very wierd. Wish I read your post before experimenting.. hopefully I won't need to go to the hospital... and after all that, it better at least be good for me....:)

Poison !! After trying mustard greens in a smoothie, I worried about getting sick. I googled Mustard Green Smoothie to make sure I didn't poison myself. I was able to get down half of a glass before I just gave up. Never again.

It still surprises me that there are not many warnings online concerning mustard green smoothies!!

Hilarious. Yay! I'm not the only one! I SERIOUSLY thought I was buying Kale. So imagine my surprise when I tasted mine. I was like 'DANG!Spicy!WTF?' The only thing that tipped me off that I had bought Mustard Greens was that the girl checking me out was like 'Mustard Greens?' I insisted that I was buying Kale. What a moron (and I mean me) I kinda like my smoothie though, in a very weird way, so Im going to try to get it down...just slowly... my belly is very warm at the moment. Wish me luck.

Ughhhh I made a mustard green smoothie last night. It was spicy but like other commenters I didn't want it to go to waste so I drank it down. An hour later, I started feeling really queasy. And then I threw up and threw up and threw up and threw up. It was awful!!! I woke up this morning and have been googling stuff to see what is wrong with me. Now I can attribute it to those darn mustard greens! I'll never make that mistake again! People, stay away from the mustard green smoothies!!
